DOTATATE PET/CT

5000+ scans done & counting

DOTATATE PET/CT Scan is a specialized imaging procedure combining positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) to provide detailed images of the body. The test is mainly used for detecting and monitoring neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Neuroendocrine tumors are rare tumors that originate in the cells of the neuroendocrine system, which includes parts of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and lungs.

A special substance called DOTATATE, which is combined with a small amount of radioactive material, is used in this test. This combination is particularly effective because DOTATATE attaches itself to the tumor cells, and the radioactive material makes them visible on the scan. This allows the doctors to see even tiny tumors that might not be visible on other imaging tests.

Specific Instructions:

Before undergoing a PET CT of the abdomen, it's important to follow these instructions:

  • Fasting : You may be asked to fast for 4-6 hours before the test. Drinking water is allowed.

  • Medications : Inform the doctor about any medications you are taking. Some medicines might need to be stopped for a while before the scan.

  • Allergies : Inform the doctor if you have any known allergies.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding : Since this test involves exposure to radiation, it is critical to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Pre-scan hydration : It’s recommended to drink plenty of water before the scan to help flush the radioactive material from your body.

  • Upon arrival, you will receive an injection of the DOTATATE combined with a radioactive tracer.

  • After the injection, you might need to wait for about 1-2 hours. This gives the DOTATATE time to circulate through your body and attach itself to the tumor cells.

  • During the scan, you’ll lie on a narrow table that slides into a large tunnel-shaped scanner.

  • The PET/CT scan takes about 30 minutes to an hour.

  • It helps in detecting neuroendocrine tumors which can be challenging to find through other methods.

  • It is important for planning treatment for patients with NETs.

  • It can be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.

What Information Does It Provide?
  • The size and location of the neuroendocrine tumors.
  • Information on whether or not the tumor has spread to other parts of the body.
  • It can also help in evaluating the effectiveness of ongoing treatment.
When to Get This Test?

This test is generally recommended when there is a suspicion of neuroendocrine tumors, based on symptoms or results of other tests. It can also be done for monitoring purposes if you are already diagnosed with NETs.

Modifiable factors:

  • Not fasting before the test
  • Taking certain medications

Non-modifiable factors:

  • Biological characteristics of the tumor
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, it's considered to be safe. The amount of radiation used is low and the benefits of the scan usually outweigh the risks.

You might feel a slight prick from the injection, but the scan itself is painless.

Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding fasting and medications. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid metal objects as they can interfere with the scan.

Typically, it takes a few days for the results to be ready.

Your doctor will discuss the results and the appropriate course of action, which may include further tests or treatment.

Allergic reactions are rare. Inform your doctor if you have had reactions to medical dyes or contrast materials in the past.

Yes, you can drive home after the test unless you have been given a sedative.

You should drink plenty of water to help flush out the radioactive material from your body.

Due to radiation exposure, it's not recommended for people other than the patient to be in the scanning room.

It's not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. Discuss with your doctor.

DOTATATE PET/CT scan is a highly specialized imaging test used primarily for detecting and monitoring neuroendocrine tumors. It involves injecting a combination of DOTATATE and a radioactive material into the bloodstream. Preparing properly by following doctor's instructions and understanding the importance and procedure can help in making the experience as comfortable as possible. The test plays a critical role in diagnosing, staging, and making decisions regarding the management of NETs.
